Western Chemical In the News

PRESS RELEASE: Ferndale Washington, June 15, 2009

Subject:  Aquacalm becomes the second drug Indexed by the US FDA for ornamental fish.

Aquatic Life Sciences Inc., the World Leader in Fish Health Products, announces that Aquacalm™ is now available for ornamental fish in the United States. Aquacalm™ is intended to be used for sedation and anesthesia of ornamental fish. It is the second product to be Indexed by the US FDA under new MUMS legislation.

Jim Brackett DVM, President of Aquatic Life Sciences Inc. (which includes Western Chemical & Syndel Laboratories), states that: “ Aquacalm™ is an outstanding sedative and anesthetic and will be a valuable tool for use in ornamental fish culture. Aquacalm™ is different from some other available sedatives and anesthetics as the dose can be easily and safely adjusted for many purposes. This will be helpful for shipping, photographing and handling”. Dr. Brackett continues, “We would like to thank our University, Industry and Agency partners who have worked closely with us to support Indexing and testing”.

Aquacalm™ is a powder and will be available in a 1, 5, 10, and 50 gram package sizes. It will be available in the United States from Western Chemical as well as selected distributors.

Steven Becker, CEO of Aquatic Life Sciences, adds “We are pleased to have Aquacalm™ added to the list of FDA Indexed products. Earlier this year, our spawning product, Ovaprim® was added to the Index. These products are the first two products to be Indexed under the FDA MUMS program and will be instrumental as we expand into ornamental fish health products in North America and internationally”.

More Aquacalm™ Information: Aquacalm™ is indexed for the sedation and anesthesia of ornamental finfish. Aquacalm™ is not for use in fish intended for human or animal consumption. Sedation may be necessary in situations such as strip spawning for hatchery rearing, transporting fish from supplier to wholesaler or retailer, photographing fish as part of a strategic marketing approach, or removal of fish from exhibit tanks prior to cleaning. Anesthesia may be necessary in situations where detailed fish examination or minor surgical procedures are to be conducted. Aquacalm™ has been tested on representative ornamental finfish species, but has not been tested on all fish species. The effect of Aquacalm™ may vary between (and within) species, depending upon age and physical condition of fish, and under different water conditions. Sedate or anesthetize fish in water with temperature and pH close to the temperature and pH of the rearing water. For more information please see the product label and package insert at: www.wchemical.com

More Information on FDA Indexing: In order to be legally marketed, an animal drug product intended for a minor species must be Approved, Conditionally Approved, or Indexed by the FDA. Aquacalm™® is INDEXED. For more information from the FDA regarding Indexing, visit: http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/DevelopmentApprovalProcess/MinorUseMinorSpecies/ucm164110.htm
